I Can't Believe It's Not Not Bowie!

Welcome, weary traveler of the cold tundra of the internet, to the warm ear-oasis of Bowie and Bear. It is my intention to offer you music both new and old, and to throw in miscellaneous non-musical paraphernalia every now and then.

Why thus titled, "Bowie and Bear"? Quite typically, any account I can provide will have been concocted after the fact. What follows is not how I came up with the name, but rather an explanation of the many virtues found in it having settled on it.

Since this blog covers music, it would be a tangible plus for the name to be somehow linked with it. Additionally, my tentative hope is to cover a wide range of music rather than a particular scene or genre. Naturally, these two ideas led me to Bowie. What better byword for music and diversity?

With the seed planted, planning proceeded to the second part of the title. Obviously, "Bowie" by itself would be insufficient in scope for a general music blog. Then it struck me: Bowie needed a sidekick, a Robin to his Batman. A younger, trendier version of the same principles. Yet, it must also have flair of its own. So, after some consideration I decided on an animal companion to go with Bowie.

Surprisingly, I didn't go for the obvious choice. I did, however, contemplate the terrible alternative name - "Diamond Progs".
No, it would not be an anthropomorphic dog of doomsday but a bear that I would finally settle on. Why a bear, you ask? I put forward the proposition that more than any other animal, the bear represents the depth and range of modern music. Consider the plethora of artists and bands to have adopted bear in their monikers - from the alt/indie-rock power of a Grizzly Bear or Minus the Bear to the chilly electronica of Gold panda, warm psychedelia of Panda Bear, or jazz-fusion of Polar Bear. The bear is able to stand as symbol for all these things. Plus, the word starts with a B.

So there we have it, Bowie and Bear, our dynamic, alliterative duo. The two parts of the name allude to music from past and present decades, the contrast between man and bear to its variety, and the duo dynamic to the social aspect of music listening. Welcome aboard - it's up to you whether you want to be the Bowie or the Bear on this journey, we'll accommodate you. Let us begin our musical adventure...
